After a harrowing drive through the mountains last night (I turned off the highway onto a pass through at about 4:30 just as the sun was going down), I woke up this morning to snow everywhere. I was in Cody WY and perplexed. Do I go on? If not, where do I go from here? Should I wait out the snow in Cody? It's a very small town, and the Buffalo Bill museum didn't really interest me. Well, I sucked it up and decided to head for Yellowstone anyway -- hell, I've driven in snow before... I quickly learned that the decision was taken out of my hands. Flashing lights, a sign announcing road closure and a dozen pickups doing U-turns, greeted me right out of town. Honestly relieved, I followed suit. But now what? I didn't think I could go back the way I came. Those roads would also be closed. Was I stuck in Cody. Craptastic. I pulled over and broke out my paper maps. It was the first time I had consulted them. Another way out! Thank god. I headed north and back to my old friend, the I-90. Looks like I am too late in the season for Yellowstone, Grand Teton and Glacier National Parks. I'm bummed, but let's be honest all I was going to do was drive the loop around them. No camping or hiking for me. (I mean, it's not likely anyway but certainly not at this time of year!)
Instead, it looks like I'm going to stick to the I-90 for a while and motor towards Seattle (Dana, imacomin'!) Let's see what Spokane has to offer.
BTW - I went to the Museum of the Rockies today. Felt kinda silly looking at Dinosaur heads in Montana when I never cross the street and see them at the AMNH in my own backyard. At least I did turn down the planetarium show that came with my entrance ticket.
