Have I ever told you the story of accidentally taking a train to Munich? I was Eurorailing, traveling from Milan to Monte Carlo. We decided to hop on a train heading for Monaco. It made for a very awkward border crossing. Turns out that the Italian word for Munich is Monaco. Leason learned.
Here is the part of the story that I don't usually share. I was initially suspicions when I looked at the train schedule. I wasn't certain, but the trip seemed to take way too long for the distance that we needed to travel. I quickly overlooked this irradiating fact because I was happy to get a couchette and have somewhere inexpensive to sleep. It was a Sunday afternoon in Milan, everything was closed and I wanted to move on to the next city. Idiotically, I decided that it might be a very slow local train - Europe's version of the MetroNorth, but with sleeping cars. It wasn't, and I should have known better. I thought about that trip a lot yesterday while driving my schizophrenic route through Oregon. I'm tired and ready for this trip to be over. I feel like I'm pushing to get from one thing, that I barely care about, to another. It's just traveler's fatigue and a little dedicated time vegging in front of the tv in San Fransisco will quickly cure it. The apartment I rented in SF is not available until Monday, so I am killing time until then. I drove 5 plus hours to get to Crater Lake, stayed for 45 minutes and continued on. First Portland, then out to the coast for a bit, then back into the mountains and am now back out to the coast again. There's no rhyme or reason this route, I'm just heading from one place to another eager to get to the next spot regardless of the logic involved in my decision.
Eh, just go slow. Tomorrow, Eureka? Mt. Shasta? I do love a good Shasta. Or just wind that little mini down the coast and spend a couple of days soaking up Napa.
